I think the government certainly should have treated it like an STD epidemic. I believe in the model we had from syphillis- Weren't health departments involved in notification of partners? So yes, some meddling is appropriate. I don't think quarantine is, and you always have your wild hares trying to get folks quarantined, but valid governmental action (meddling, if you will) is certainly warranted where there is a huge health crisis. I am always happy to see the CDC respond to a crisis, and for the health departments to mobilize for education and support. If that's meddling, I'd like to see a heck of a lot more of it.
