Good analogy Mike. My compassion for the plight of the Palestinians always relates back to my roots in Ireland and the plight of the Catholics in the north. I see some very similar issues yet there are also some vast differences. The Pals have been really screwed by their own leadership or lack thereof. What irks me is the incredible lack of compassion for the plight of these people. For some folks its almost bordering on glee to see the hardships that they endure.

Believe me, its very easy to sit back in your armchair 5,000 miles away and point to this and that as being logical resolutions to the issue. You can pull up many historical instances and point to many reasons for this or that happening. This is not an issue that can be fully understood through reading history. Like Northern Ireland, this is a situation that can only be fully understood by being "on the ground". Its a whole different thing when one lives in it, smells it and touches it every day. I've seen Belfast at its worst in person and its a whole lot different than seeing it as an image on a 27 inch screen.

This is not an issue of good versus bad.....its an issue of right versus wrong. The Clinton admin. at least had the fortitude to persevere and came awfully close to putting a peace plan in place. This current admin. seems to have absolutely no desire to seek any peace plan in the region and that will remain as a big part of their legacy amongst other blunders in the ME.

If you would have told me about what's happening in Ireland today back in '87 I would have said you were out of your mind....never going to happen in my lifetime! Well it has and is and due mainly to the persistence in negotiation by the two parties through a very influential mediator (George Mitchell).

Call me crazy but I hope that the same thing happens between the Israelis and Palestinians. I am convinced that this will only happen through US intervention, as was the case in Northern Ireland. The road to peace in Jerusalem leads through Washington. I just hope that the road will open again soon....I predict it will after 2008.
