That was an interesting sample letter you presented. It actually defines an ASP business model, if you look at it carefully and begin to imagine "decency as a managed service." As for writing a letter to the FCC on this go round? I've given it some thought. The first thing that I'd suggest they do is spend a little time reading their job descriptions. Once they were beyond that, everything else would be redundant. No smiley here.

Now that you've seeded the idea in my head to write a letter, I'm finding it difficult drafting one that doesn't castigate. Obviously, that sort of thing doesn't wind up in anyone's mailbag next to the scales when it comes time to weighing opinions, especially if it's substantive. But I haven't forgotten this. If I'm able to tame the visceral issues brewing within, and get down to something objective and constructive, I'll let you know. The problem I'm having is keeping a straight face throughout all this, knowing full well that anything that I can offer has in all likelihood been delivered to them in spades many times over, only to be shelved in some sub-basement archive for future review.

Internet surfers ride wave of broadband price

But experts think Telkom might have to reduce prices on its fixed-line service rather than brave it out in a competitive climate where its biggest shareholder, the government, has accused the telecommunications giant of profiteering, the market for voice fixed-lines continues to plummet, and cellular Internet providers are nibbling at its heels.

Meanwhile, South Africa faces the challenge of ensuring that more than one in ten South Africans have ready and affordable access to the Internet - regarded as essential for development in the global world. And despite improvements in speed and pricing of Internet access, South Africa is lagging behind other countries.

Broadband challenge faces Britain
BBC News | 16 April 2007

Time is running out to get the UK in shape to cope with the next wave of net use, says a report.

Tough decisions on how to encourage telecoms firms to build faster networks must be made within two years, warns the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG).

Without these networks the UK could suffer profound social and economic setbacks, says the industry group.

Taking no action could also mean that digital divisions across the UK become entrenched.
