There's already a gun registeration fee (I think). An ownership tax would be just an extension of that. You have the right to bear arms for $2 per day has a nice ring to it!

Not really. After all, we used to be able to legally buy machine guns and grenades in this country under the second amendment. You can still buy a machine gun, but the cost (due to hidden taxes) and transfer taxes on ownership are so high that very few do.
