re: In any case the safety record for CCP holders is pretty good. I've already posted about the low level of crimes (which would include rage shootings) from those holders.

For more on that issue -

"In Florida, where 315,000 permits have been issued, there are only five known instances of violent gun crime by a person with a permit. This makes a permit-holding Floridian the cream of the crop of law-abiding citizens, 840 times less likely to commit a violent firearm crime than a randomly selected Floridian without a permit. "

I've already stated (many times on this thread) that I am against government gun control. On the other hand, it's sort of like how I feel about abortion rights. I'm pretty much against the government telling people they can't have abortions. But that doesn't mean that I like abortion, or that I like a lot of people carry guns. I think the government (and society) should discourage both. A couple of points:

*Virtually all police forces are for tighter gun controls laws. These are the guys on the front lines of crime... and that's hard to ignore.
*The statistics on crime and especially murder are at least partially influenced by an aging population.
*Crimes by people with carry permits is probably a deceiving statistic. Those are probably the most law abiding citizens, they deal with the BS and the permit process without any fear. The ones that carry without permits are the scary ones. Encouraging more people to get carry permits is probably not a good idea because the quality of people would decline.

I see both sides of the gun control issue. But frankly I don't think the VT situation is applicable to the debate.
