Interview with a "Centrist"

Staring: Comrade Dale Baker

Sully: Good afternoon Comrade Baker.

Dale: Please call me Dale.

Sully: OK, so tell us Comrade', 'er, Dale can you give us a "centrist" POV of mainstream conservatives?

Dale: The neocons and their predecessors move in cycles, holding sway for a decade or two then receding back to the Washington fringes.... That should end by January 2009 with little likelihood that "We must invade someone else!" will be a winning political platform for several more presidential terms.

Sully: I see. In the wake of the VT massacre a lot of liberals are lining up to use it as a excuse to tighten gun control claiming it will make us safer. However, statistics clearly show that there is less violence when concealed carry permits are more open to responsible adults. Since you claim to represent the views of 60-65% of mainstream Americans, what is your take?

Dale: I said several days ago that for those who believe in more guns, the solution to guns will always be more guns no matter what the overall evidence picture tells us. It's a closely held emotional belief.

Sully: But Dale, the statistics are contrary to your POV. These "gun free zones" that libs so dearly want to set up everywhere are more likely to see multiple homicides with guns than places where guns in the hands of responsible citizens are more prevalent.

Dale: Compared to the sheer number of bodies dropping annually from suicides, accidents and gun homicides, there really is no proof that more lives are saved through defense or deterrence.

So much of this debate is anecdotal, that's why I usually avoid it. But it has more context with real numbers to chew on.

Sully: How can you say that again in the face of so much evidence to the contrary?

Dale: [T]he nutjobs will still be able to buy guns on a whim and waltz onto a campus or into an office building and open fire at whatever or whomever pains them.

Sully: [rolls eyes & scratches his head]

Sully: Robert Heinlein's: "An armed society is a polite society" provides even more compelling evidence that stiff gun control will only mean that criminals & evil, deranged people like Cho will be more likely to wreak havoc.

Dale: The chorus in this show never changes; it's like an old Broadway favorite where everyone just repeats the lyrics they know over and over. It's impervious to actual debate.

Sully: Sheesh! Ain't that the truth!

Dale: [T]he ridiculous notion that anyone not pro-Bush is way out on the left today is statistical nonsense.

Sully: Huh!?!?

Dale: You can be sure that the political strategists who will actually fight the next election aren't dismissing 60-65% of the electorate with simplistic slogans and insults.

Sully: Uh, that 60-65% would be "centrists" just like you?

Dale: Just more proof that the American electorate is now dominated by ultra-left communist sympathizers.

Sully: We'll take a short break here while Comrade Baker takes his meds.
