Taking off on your point about perfidy:

I find the "creation" of the straw man enemy one of the strangest features of SI (and the rest of the world). I don't understand creating imaginary people, when there are real people all around.

I mean we ALL make assumptions- but when someone says to you "This assumption is wrong. Here's what I really think..." logic dictates you would listen, or so I would think. This just happened to me on another board. I assumed someone would accept FOX as a good source, because based on his politics I assumed he was a FOX watcher. But he said he wasn't. So I accept that. I'm even GLAD of it. And when I correct some people about their assumptions about me, they do the same thing- accept it, and occasionally even apologize. That's positive communication- where we actually learn something.

What I don't get is why some people would rather cling to their illusions about an opponent then learn the reality and deal with that. The reality is often less black and white- which means we are often much closer to agreement in grays than our initial black and white illusions can make us think we are.
