Therefore, there has to be a non-L3 die.

Why? They can just disable it, even if it works. It's a marketing distinction.

I think that at first, they'll make just the one die, like they did way back with the whole pre-Newcastle thing. Doesn't make sense to try to ramp up 2 at once, initially, IMO.

Dear Joe:

Very possible that server DCs (and desktop high end) will have the 2MB L3 and that DCs without L3 will be mainstream desktop and DTR mobile. The servers would get the most benefit from the 2MB L3. Agena is the quad core desktop and it has 2MB L3. Kuma is the desktop DC with 2MB L3. Kuma can also fill the role of DC server (Bucharest?). Rana is the desktop DC without any L3. Spica is a single core K10 again without L3.

So we have four die designs, Agena and Barcelona QC 2MB, Bucharest and Kuma DC 2MB, Rana DC 0MB and Spica SC 0MB. That is the same as in 90nm, Santa Rosa DC 2x1MB, Windsor DC 2x512KB, Venus SC 1x1MB and Venice SC 1x512KB. Of course that doesn't count mobile Turion or value Sempron die designs at either process.

So that destroys those "there can't be that many die designs" naysayers.
