Bloody hell!! I recommend living somewhere else. Sleeping with a gun under the pillow is not a way to live.

A school mate of my wife's, Susan Burdett, kept a baseball bat for self-defence. Males are usually much stronger than women and on a muscular basis can handle a girl with a bat without too much problem. safe-nz.org.nz I was under the impression it was a lone attack on Susan [not according to that information]

He used her bat against her. A gun is more tricky as a girl can shoot as well as a bloke [not really, but near enough for government work as TJ says].

I wouldn't want to live somewhere that I thought it worthwhile to carry a gun around with me on a regular basis. Having one in the house would be more acceptable, just as I bought a breathing mask several years ago in case my lungs and eyes need protection for any reason [fire, volcano, sars, H5N1, poison gas, civil insurrection, anti-flu on aircraft].

In New Zealand it's illegal to have a gun for self-defence. It's illegal to carry knives or any weapons in public [other than for legal purposes].

Can Americans carry knives? Carried openly or concealed? I suppose so if they are allowed to carry guns around. Maybe it depends on the state as does gun toting.

A nephew's girl friend, Marie Jamieson, police.govt.nz was abducted from a street while walking home at night and her damaged body found behind an industrial premises a week later. The killer/s was not found. His DNA is recorded, so they just need to find him. I am in favour of every male between ages 15 and 35 having to provide DNA samples to be recorded permanently. Once that's done, males 35 to 60. Then males over 60. Then males 10 to 15. Then females in the same age groups. Then babies when they are born and everyone.

DNA is identity. Certifiable! No messing around. No lies or guesswork.

In a short time the killer would be found because he has relatives. Partial matches would lead directly to the guy himself. Then kill the bastard. I have no idea why execution by hanging isn't still done.

Better still, from an organ transplant point of view, by surgical removal of the useful organs and other parts, while on a life support machine to keep them fresh.

The organs should be sold by auction, with the money received going to the victim's dependants and family.

Note that being a sexist I write "he", not "they" or "he/she". I'm quite happy to do profiling - it boosts the chances of success. It's annoying being a male that I get hassled by authorities while my wife doesn't, but that's profiling for you. Males commit the great majority of criminal acts, so it's best to sort through them first.

My wife's uncle was murdered in his house by a guy wanting booze, which her uncle wouldn't provide. I don't know the full circumstances but he was stabbed. The murderer would have been out 15 years ago because in those days, even for murder, prison sentences were only about 7 years. Insane, but that's what it was.

I had never heard of murder for the first 20 years of my life other than infrequent items in newspapers. Now it's a popular and a daily event [almost].

my friend in philippines stock grenades in secret places at home (no kids/dogs around, obviously), and figures he should not try to duke it out with any automatic rifle equipped pros using his puny 9 mm, and correctly, imo, suspects that grenades tossed randomly into the lighted portion of his living room, say, from his position of darkness upstairs may prove effective, even though the cleaning crew may have some trouble when morning arrives

he has a pearl farm in bushwanga, and sports an ex-navy swedish aluminum landing craft complete with the proper defensive equipment that require solid mounts (as opposed to the casual glove compartment) and carries water jet ski and such etc - the entire contraption is meant as a transport for high valued pearls and diving equipment, and also, with the ramp down, provides for excellent swimming and sun worshipping platform
