Yes, it was pre-split. I always refer to real stock prices, charts don't give the real picture if there have been splits. I recall Apple was getting close to book value of their assets at the time. I think they still had at least 2-3 billion in cash on hand, that would have been very attractive to other companies for a takeover, hostile or otherwise.

I think this was about the time Gil Amelio was still around, post Mike "Diesel" Spindler and Steve Job was perhaps brought on as an "advisor." I don't recall the exact timing, and in fact Apple shares may have been that low well into Jobs' iCEO term, when the clones were still around and before the iMac had shipped. It's all been lost in the mist of time to me.
