new jersey has the same laws. it is a political thing about jobs.. they also try to claim it is unsafe to pump your own gas. What it is , is another opportunity for an attendant to get your credit card number, and ring up false charges,, or another one was to over charge on the ticket. Numerous times on new jersey turnpike they would catch rings of attendants ripping off customers. Never liked the idea of giving an attendant my credit card and he/she walks away with it to ring up the charge. no idea of how many more tickets get rung up. Plus the consumer is paying more for the gasoline as the dealer has to pay the attendant a salary. For the oil companies it makes little difference , it all comes out of the dealer unless it is a company operated station. in Europe for years they have closed stations, or totally unattendant and you can drive up the pumps which are activated 24/7 so people can always fill their tanks. here in united states the fire departments will not allow it.

Want to hear something scary? I always leave my car run when I gas up - stays warm that way. Well...for whatever reason I wasn't thinking and I had a cig in my mouth. I leaned over and I hear BOOM! It was like a canon....blew the smokey treat right out of my mouth! It was a brain fart....I've never had a lit cig in my mouth while pumping gas - Now that will make a guy quit!
