I don't know if there is any prospect that the three distinctly different groups of Iraqis will establish a trustful and productive relationship. Certainly the presence of a powerful moderating force helps to further the cooperation, and to limit blatant infighting. There has never been, nor will there ever been any guarantee of sustained peace anywhere. The ill will and class conflict that Saddam promoted has certainly undercut the good will that people with different POVs need to cooperate.

Sometimes it takes generations of people living and working together to overcome ingrained distrust. I grew up in a world where there was a history of disrespect for Irish and especially Polish and Czechoslovakian immigrants. As the rest of my grandparents generation die off the complaints I used to hear about one ethnic group or another has died off as well.
