Thank you Karen. I wonder if those detractors choose to see an opportunity to gain power while diminishing their American political opponents, and thus overlook the long view that the immediate situation portends.

"dash something together, pretend they made a dent, and then run off to the next problem."

We must admit it is tempting.

"Others don't want us to do preventative planning at all. Or do anything that might actually PREVENT another murdering barbarian attack."

That is partly a failure in leadership. Remember that one party was willing to accept dishonesty at the very top to retain power, and that their President took a poll every day to find out what was popular rather than leading. This is very long but it addresses the issue better than I am ever likely to be able to.

"into "blame" and "looking busy" rather than actual contributing input to help solve problems. "

Have we become a shortcut society? (I believe that is a profound question in the context of your insightful comments.)

Others don't want us to do preventative planning at all. Or do anything that might actually PREVENT another murdering barbarian attack.

You mean like W after the "Bin Laden determined to attack" briefing of 8/6/01? Then after bin Laden actually attacked, he immediately set the wheels turning to get the war of his heart's desire in Iraq, which has worked out real well for all involved. W's war has PREVENTED what, exactly? The cost has obviously been enormous, the benefit is pretty obscure.

Or are you thinking of somebody else?
