But the Iraqi Parliament still plans to take a two-month vacation. Could the case for withdrawal be made any simpler? " Et tu Bill, et tu? Maybe there's hope for us to finally agree on the realities and relearn a lesson on the limits of power and the utility of "helping" others to see our light. The only thing I'd question is the statement that our soldiers are living in the dust trying to bring a civilized order to Iraq. I think that by now most of them are counting the days until they can leave that strange smelling, strange sounding place of explosions and death and join their families. In the middle of a senseless war a soldier's mission becomes single minded honor and survival. Many of them will have a hard time picking up the pieces of a safer, less adrenalin filled life that will seem empty without the closeness and bonds that form in small groups living in extreme danger. Many of them will have difficulty dealing with the hyper alertness and danger-honed instincts that develop over time when every next moment could bring death. The cost of this war to them will continue for decades, maybe lifetimes. And all for what? What a fucking debacle. As an aside, how can Bush say on the one hand that we're surging our troops in order to quell the violence, and on the other hand say that if we give a time for the withdrawal of American force that would be a disaster since "the enemies of the Iraqi government would simply lie low and wait for the date that we left?" Isn't that what we want, i.e. those fighting us in Iraq to lie low and decrease their level of violence so that the Iraqi forces can supposedly use the time to improve their ability to handle things themselves? So much spin, so many lies, so little thinking. I've gotten to the point where I'm becoming almost certain that if the Bush Administration says it, it must be lie. Ed
