There are really fewer than a dozen out of the top 50 US cities where living in the core city is desirable. New York, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, and maybe Seattle and Portland.

Yep, and the public schools generally suck in most urban areas (with the exception of a few magnet schools..)

I suspect in 20 years time all of the cities above will still have plenty of cheap housing.
