For those who are interested in technology, the Prius with its stability control, multiple airbags, and crash engineering is a very safe car. With two motors engaging at once, it can also out-accelerate most other automobiles in the speed ranges up to highway speeds. If you want something slightly larger, there's the Camry hybrid. The Prius is not like the old Volkswagen or even worse, the old Renault Dauphine, which certainly was a tin-can death trap.

I also prefer spending $25 every two weeks at the gas station instead of $85 once a week.

Quite right. This is something I never understood. I suppose that in the competitive model of trucking, he who can deliver faster wins. But the technology has been available for at least five years to monitor and record automotive/truck speeds. The governor of NJ who was on his way to meet with Don Imus and had a horrible accident was found to have been going 90 mph (?) via the black box in the vehicle. Why not put them on trucks, and limit all trucks to say 45 mph? Have the sheriff look at every tenth black box to make sure everyone was behaving. You could do the same in real time with transponders and GPS. The trucking companies could have no complaint. The cost of the extra capital (for more trucks) and fuel, would simply be passed on to the consumer. The consumer might find it a good trade to not be squashed like a bug or to save a three hour delay once every three weeks because a tractor trailer jack-knifed on the commute home. When crude gets high enough, it may actually pay the consumer to have trucks go slower.
