"We're all descendants of immigrants, and aside from those of us who had ancestors among the original colonists or slaves, there were always people who wanted to keep our ancestors out."

At one time, we had an entire country to fill (if you don't count the natives, which we didn't). No longer. I don't want a population like China's or India's. People all over the globe want out of their hellholes. If we had unrestricted immigration, we'd be at a billion in no time.

Don't get me wrong, I'm for PICKY immigration, where we admit the smart, talented people from anywhere of any race LEGALLY. It's one of America's great strengths. But, that's a much smaller number..

This is really similar to the late 1800s, when mining and manufacturing companies would bring in immigrant groups or freed slaves who would take lower wages than "white" Americans and then play the whites and the immigrants off of each other to pay the lowest wages possible.

Is this really analogous? Were these immigrant groups in this country illegally? Were American cities getting inundated with people living ten to a one bedroom? Legal immigrants lived in slums during the turn of the century but most were paying taxes and not sending most of their income back to their country of origin. And don't forget that illegals are violating American law to be here.

I think its too easy to call it racism when people oppose illegal immigration. It ignores the very real problems created when illegals move to southern and western cities. And frankly, if objecting to people who pee on city streets, shoot guns into the air and could care less what happens to their neighborhood is racism, then I am guilty as charged.

Z, I thought you were once for generous welfare programs, higher wages, etc., as long as we help American citizens first before opening the borders.

Oh well, I share your feelings that we cannot seal the border nor can we pragmatically deport all illegals. But I do think we ought to give priority to legal immigrants first. It's unfair to them that the illegals are allowed to cut in line.

As for all this "share the wealth" stuff, I think you know what my thoughts are on that.

One thing to note is that no matter where you are on the political spectrum, I believe illegal immigration exacerbates the side effects of any political stance you may hold. Believe in the welfare state? Better account for all the illegals. Believe in laissez-faire capitalism? Better brace yourself for the impact on wages.
