There is little doubt the Wahbi sect of Islam uses our presence in the ME to incite violence in their followers. So in some respects we can't argue with Paul in that our ME policy has contributed to their hatred of us.

I just maintain that they are going to hate us either way. If we pulled entirely out of the ME tomorrow and let them push Israel into the sea I have little doubt they will still be preaching jihad against the great Satan. It's what they do. I sadly don't know if there is any way for this to stop without at some stage calling it the religious war that it is and just getting it on.

Yes.

Reagan decided that the potential risks and costs outweighed the potential gains.

IMO, he was absolutely correct... the odds of benefiting American national interests were very low.
