hard to define what the religious motivations are for the Tamil (LTTE) of Sri Lanka,

To the best of my knowledge, there is no religious motivation.
Sri Lanka has Tamil speaking population and Sinhalese speaking population. The Tamils (LTTE) want to secede from Sri Lanka as a country, and form their own Tamil nation on the island.

OK,left out Christians. I mentioned them in this regard in another post, and I'm still clearing out the bricks that were thrown at me. :-)

They seen like Muslims, strangely. They'd as soon kill each other as those of other faiths. It's possible, although not proven, that atheists were the most efficient and thorough, It's HARD to match the total dead run up by the Communists.

I think that, really, in all cases, religion just provides a cover and excuse for greed and power hunger and the joy men take in killing each other. We didn't get to be top dogs of the planet by being nice guys.

motivations are for the Tamil (LTTE) of Sri Lanka

If you look at a map of India and Srilanka on the same page, you will notice an Indian state in the far south on the eastern coast, called Tamil Nadu (literally translated into English - Land of the Tamils). During the British rule, many people from here moved to Sri Lanka. They are a major minority (if that makes sense) in Sri Lanka. Now they desire their own country.

When this conflict started in Sri Lanka, India sent over a peacekeeping force to stabilize the place. It stopped after a LTTE member assasinated the Indian Prime Minister. India's position since then has been "you take care of your problems, we have no desire to get involved. Be thankful we did not start a war with you, for assasinating our PM".
