Hawala : in general, a hawala transaction offers a better rate than the bank rate, and faster receipt of the money than thru a bank. The reason is usually, the person at the other end wants to move "unaccounted money" out of the country.

BTW : I used to use this mechanism in the past, but no longer do, because Indian banks have progressed in tech terms, and I can do a wire transfer which is equally fast.
