I understand what you are saying. Actually you are scaring me. Soviet cells had top down control. Is what you are saying that because of the internet top down isnt needed and that folks can gather online and plot strategy together and even create a hierarchy of sorts based on respect and experience? My thesis was that this wouldnt happen and that terrorism would become more local in scope and dominated by natives in each geographical region. You are saying no to this and that an E*bin laden actually exists now. If so how can you fight that? Special forces alone cant do the trick can it?

To fight your internet based pathological movement, i think we need to enlist allies and not all these allies will be the nicest folks. So if we both agree al quaeda is job #1, iran becomes important as do the MAS. In order to get that done, some sort of imposed settlement in the Mideast might be requrired. Israel may not like that and if thats as unstable as i imagine, you will need american and other forces to guarantee it in some fashion. Nato in palestine? Pakistan otoh as kumar points out may need new leadership because Musharif seems to be dealing with the devil. What about the oil? I can go on and no but i think instead i am going to grab some lunch.

PS So what we need then is an internet based counter insurgency to disrupt this monster. Should be easy enough to infiltrate online and plant a lot of false info. Is that what you are doing in your spare time MIke?

These trained terrorists have been cloning themselves all over the world ever since their graduation. Each cell has one or more activists. They know how to obtain operational funds locally. They are skilled in obtaining supplies for and manufacturing homemade explosives and incendiaries, and in firearm use. And they are full of ideas on what are appropriate targets. The Imams set priorities and that is all they have to do.

This will work well as long as their tactical goals are to blow things up and get more recruits. But how far can a movement go that doesn't want to build anything? It's often been remarked that for all AQ's talk of the new caliphate they don't seem to put much effort into creating governments, and when they try, they wear out their welcome fast even with Wahabbi populations because they rule so harshly and badly.
