What you are saying then is that there is no hope.

I have never said that nor have I inferred it.

What I have said is we need a dramatic shift in the deployment of our armed forces including changes in strategy and tactics.

What we have been doing since 9-11 has not dented AQ. There are in fact many signs and indications that AQ has become stronger in that time frame. We used regular army sand tables to win the conventional phase of the war in Iraq. Then we buried our heads in the sand and ignored the budding insurgency, until it became like an elephant in the living room - too big to walk around. Next we again tried regular army tactics to wipe out the elephant. It failed. Let's just admit it. Using conventional tactics against insurgents failed. That should be no surprise. well organized insurgents usually win the war of the flea, This is particularly true when the conventional force fails to adapt to the battlefield conditions.
