I am talking early on when the Iron Curtain went down over Europe. There was no MADD in the 40s and early 50s under Stalin. American army was being disbanded post WW2. Just like in vietnam and today in iraq americans had lost their appetite for war. My impression from Hawks post is that he would have somehow defended states that bordered on the Soviet Union like poland, hungary, rumania etc where russia had the preponderance of strength given that we had started bringing our troops home in 45. It would have been impossibe to fight them then and although we would have won, anybody who studies russian history knows that it wouldnt have been cost free, especially if we tried to takeover russia. IN order to do this we would have used atomic weapons with which we had a monopoly. I hate to think of the casualties. What happened instead was the subjugation of easter europe. Stalin died in 52 and the USSR slowly reformed. Millions werent killed post stalin as hawk intimates. That was going on in china where again there was little we could do without sparking a major war. Look what happened in korea when we went to far. China intervened and drove us back to the original line. If we had used nukes there as macArthur proposed we would have caused millions of deaths ostensibly to save North Korea. The guys on this thread who would make FP on the basis of use of force to spread democracy would havae been responsble for more deaths that occurred in WW2. Failed attamepts to do just this in vietnam and iraq have been major failures. We must realize what are limitations are and find peaceful ways to spread the word. Reagan proved that when the USSR fell.
