"I think where I perceived some confusion was apparently prevalent belief that we're using military force to impose democracy in Iraq."

That certainly has never been stated by me, nor is it my belief. You may have picked that up as an agenda from others, like the folks on Brianthebiker's thread, or as a complaint from extreme left wingers but that has never been my issue. I strongly disagree with both those extremes. I have, in general, supported our operations in Iraq with recognition that we are not all united in our perceptions of US goals.

"I think it's a good analogy. Democratic governments, "at the point they are founded, do not consist of politically mature constituents who are able to grasp the necessity of a mutually agreed to set of rules that seek to benefit the entire society, majority and minority.

If they are to succeed they must, without exception, bring the well being and best interests of individual constituents to the heart of the matter. If we Americans were united in voice behind this as our cause, the world would lay flowers at our feet. We, unfortunately, are not. We have more 'nuke em all' and 'we are the evil empire' voices than the afore mentioned spirit of unity...sadly.
