You are aboslutely right about France and Afghanistan....they were up front and in full support after 9/11. No qualms, but they asked to be listened to in the councils of great nations because they had had EXTENSIVE experience (including Chirac himself) battling muslim insurgents.

PBS just ran a documentary on Tony Blair's rise and fall...and it had a great story about his efforts to go get "Jack" on board with the Iraq adventure and Chirac made a number of points about the dangers awaiting in Iraq. Supposedly Blair left the meeting saying that Jack just "didn't get it", whereas now it is acknowledged that he got it exactly right as to the risks and perils of the Iraq invasion and the aftermath.
