I never quite understood how a firm belief in personal rights jibes with letting various states make up their own rules for all kinds of different personal behavior and public policy issues.

You can get married here, you can't over there, assisted suicide is legal in one town but not across the border, gun laws go all over the place, drinking ages could vary over a huge range, etc.

Always made more sense to me to define what all US citizens have a right to, period, and make sure that is upheld and enforced in all 50 states. Apart from that, states could define local policy issues and programs and tailor them to local needs.
