They don't have OIL. They only have oil, and it ain't enuf to fight for, so we aren't there. A very poor EROEI, strategically. It is, however, a nice piece of property if you are playing Monopoly, like the Chinese are. Turns out to be a lot cheaper than playing Rome-Total War and capturing and controlling resources by force of arms.

NY Times has an article today that Mosul is being ethnically cleansed of kurds by sunni arabs. I am sure the kurds will do the same in Kirkuk. Sunnis and Shias are doing some of this in bagdad and other places. Most of it at is being done intimidation but there isnt all that much actual bloodshed surrounding it. Maybe this partition is needed to prevent civil war. Maybe a federal or confederal state can arise with 18 states or three major regions after the ethnic cleansing runs its course, not before. Maybe our troops are in the way of something that though objectionable is inevitable. Hell, didnt we have to fight our civil war so the Union could stand and slaves could be set free? We couldnt prevent slaughter in our own country 150 years ago, so how can we expect to impose peace in iraq. We won. Saddam is gone. There are no wmds in iraq. The country will pull apart and then maybe together with warlordism, militiaism, al quaeda, baathism, kurdish pashmerga etc all fighting it out. The aims of US fp should be to control iranian influence in the shiaa area as best we can, to isolate and destroy al quaeda in sunni areas and to control the nationalistic aspirations of the kurds to prevent a turkish incursion in the north. We can do that without the troop levels we have now and without actively intervening. Will we accomplish all our goals? Probably not but we never accomplished all we set out to do in the Cold war either or our own civil war.
