And yes, all things are easy from "Ft Livingroom," or even easier it would seem from "Fort Congress-in-front-of-mics..."

They, most of whom have "Never Been There" seem to have ALL the answers.

You got it right.

To even begin thinking about making a judgement we need to know what the LT and Captain and the men with them were doing and we need to know the mission of this patrol.

There is nothing unusual about a fireteam (approx 5 men) or a squad (approx 10 men) establishing an RON site (Remain OverNight) away from the main troop body.

Or it may have been a listening post (LP) or observation post (OP).

There is nothing unusual about an RON site, or an LP or an OP being overrun. It is a basic infantry tactic and it happens often on both sides. Sometimes it is due to a screw up and sometimes it is due to the attack coming from an overwhelming force.
