I agree that the religious spokespersons do not consider the Nation of Israel to be a religious state at this point. The chief rabbis, however, expect the appearance of a Messiah who will bring that about some time in the future, do they not?

I don't think that's a major problem, so long as the government of Israel doesn't become dominated by reactionary rabbis intent upon forcibly converting/deporting all non-Jews from Israel.

Again, that's part of Jewish history, just as many Arabs could consider the advent of the Mahdi to be part of their history.

But the key point is to defuse this notion that Zionism, in it's original form, was a religious movement. Now what it eventually transforms into is a completely different question.
