Kumar,

Bottom line : its a grey area, not black/white.

Good point, and I hope my earlier words weren't construed as asserting that Islam was more oppressive than any other religions around during it's heyday... Because it was actually quite progressive, even with regard to "dhimmitude", in comparison to its rivals of 1000 years ago.

Unfortunately, I opine that Islam has never truly left the middle ages in its attitudes towards the modern world, whereas other religions have been required to reconcile themselves with today's scientific, economic, and technological discoveries, as well as progressive philosophical thought. Islam, on the other hand, had only had to face this same reconciliations in the decades since the toppling of the Ottoman Empire, and spread of western ideas.

And I would suggest that this is what we're seeing finally reaching a zenith in the Muslim world, with the natural reactionary response from the hardcore militants fighting tooth and nail to restore a past glory that is just inconsistent with, and intolerant of, the modern world.

And that's why you'll see me post stories about moderate trends within Islam renouncing violence as a means of evangelizing their faith, because I believe it's a vital aspect of our nation's foreign policy that we must incorporate into our strategic analysis and planning. We simply MUST support those elements within Islam that are willing to condemn religious violence.
