Apparently the practice of giving corn syrup to the bees, after taking their honey, can put them in to nutritional stress- thus leaving them vulnerable. You can see how, over time, a common practice like that could ruin bee colonies.

white cane sugar is best. Bee keepers have switched to corn syrup in the US because it is inexpensive, but I think that's probably been a mistake.
