"conservatives being traditionalists"

I can't agree with you there. As Ron Paul has pointed out so clearly, the policies of the current crop of neo-cons and camp followers, and most of the Repub presidential candidates, are a great departure from traditional Republicanism. Bush et al. have ridden roughshod over the U.S. Constitution, the most hallowed of US traditions. Incidentally Paul's position on foreign policy issues is more radical (in a good way, and in a way that is consistent with the thinking of the men who wrote the Constitution)) than any of the Democrats that I've heard about. He doesn't just want to pull out of Iraq as soon as possible, and to forswear all such imperialist adventures, he also wants to disband the CIA. Paul opposed the Iraq invasion, while "liberal" Clinton supported it.

Since my main concern about US politics is in the area of foreign policy, I see the most important political distinction there as being between those who wish to pursue the dreams of empire and those who want the US to remain within its own borders. In the last century the so-called liberals have been just as imperialistic as the the so-called conservatives.
