I think there is some kind of technique beyond rote memorization, like latin and greek word roots?

Most of the homeschooling materials are very big on rote work. And there isn't anything wrong with that. In fact, a certain amount of it is needed. But, incorporating that into the bigger picture is where a lot of the materials break down.
