I have a lot of respect for you, and yours are some of the posts I try to read most carefully. Clearly, there's a lot of emotion tied up in this immigration subject, but I'd sure like to see the debate remain debate, and not argument. I'm not blaming you in particular, but everyone who is allowing more heat than light on this subject. In my opinion, ill-informed as it may be, immigration is a good thing. Too much immigration, too quickly, is a bad thing. IMO, that's why the immigration laws were written. Failure of the country to guard its boarders is having enormous negative consequences. Something should have been done ten years ago or more, but it wasn't, and now things are approaching crisis proportions, and overreaction is almost certain to happen. I'm of the opinion that law enforcement is one of the jobs the gov't should handle, even if it gets to be a major job and the enforcers are required to get out of the coffee shops and actually do something. I am NOT one of those who thinks that when the job gets tough, that the responsibility should be forced on others, such as employers. Business people should not be required to collect taxes, and they should not be responsible for doing document searches or background checks on people they employ. (And, yes, I know that the flames will come from this comment). I also understand that a massive roundup of illegals isn't practical and certainly isn't proper. However, whenever such a person comes in contact with authorities, whether for a traffic ticket or requesting medical attention, or trying to enroll kids in school, they should be reported to the authorities for possible detention or deportation. For such a scheme to work, it is first imperative that some control be exercised over the inflow of lawbreaking people at the borders. I frankly don't care if such control is done via landmines or cameras, or an expensive fence, but the control MUST be exercised. If people want to break our laws, they should be prepared to suffer the consequences, and that goes for murderers as well as illegal immigrants. If my opinions make you angry, that's too bad. I still respect your opinions.
