A welfare state can't have open borders

Jim, I find little, if anything, in your post to take issue with. I guess I started getting pissed off about this when I spent two days at my state GOP convention the weekend immediately after this compromise was announced. Not only were other delegates and some pols voicing their anger over the bill before it was even written, but several were running around with "impeach Bush" and "recall Isackson" signs over it. Then there were the people giving me dirty looks over it when I was working the McCain campaign table, some even going out of their way to come over and tell us how much they hated him. Frankly, our open tent party includes a whole lot of narrow-minded dolts, bigots and plain ol' ignoramuses. I thought we got rid of the worst ones when Pat Buchanan jumped ship some fifteen years ago, but many seem to have drifted back.

As for this thread, I guess I'm pissed because I'm disappointed. Not in longnshort - he can't disappoint me because I have very low (zero or negative) expectations of him - but in those here whose opinions on issues I actually have respect for. This used to be a place where people who knew what the word "liberal" used to mean (and still means in some parts of the world) and who actually understood the constitutional and economic issues being discussed could point out (and sometimes make light of) the fallacies of left-wing SIer's arguments, share insightful news and opinion, and poke fun at nutjobs like Armpit. There's been plenty of mostly civil disagreement here in the past, including over such things as abortion, religion, the war. I think most are still fully capable of enlightened debate, but lately, on certain issues especially, the discussion is little more than angry bumper-sticker rhetoric, pasting of same from elsewhere on the internet, and labeling of anyone who disagrees as a "liberal" infiltrator from Soup Al's thread.

I hold people I respect to a high standard of reason - I expect more from them than "yeah, Ann Coulter is right and if you call her a racist you're a dirty liberal name-caller." I don't let them off the hook just because we share the same opinions on other issues (or of some of the left-wing a-holes on SI). That'd be like not telling your brother he's an idiot for cheating on his taxes ... or his wife.

Excellent post Jim! Many of your POV's are spot on IMO.

<< "Clearly, there's a lot of emotion tied up in this immigration subject, but I'd sure like to see the debate remain debate, and not argument. I'm not blaming you in particular, but everyone who is allowing more heat than light on this subject" >>

Very well said!

Tim

Jim, there are many ways to enforce the laws on illegal immigrants. From employer based enforcement to documentation flagging, the policing can be effective without the wild wild west roundups the alarmists are talking about.
