Let us suppose that in this society every baby boy is born with an "A" or a "B" stamped on his forehead.

Does it make a difference in this case?

I can't tell that it would. Neither would it make any difference if the boys are "stamped" after birth. That's my point.

That is where your point breaks down. If we we talking about cows, your point would be fine. But human beings are not cows. They can look in a mirror and think about their future.

If the "B" boys are predestined losers in their society, my point is that they will not go quietly to their fate. They will demand another out for themselves, another way to earn honor. It will likely involve danger and violence, these traits coming naturally to young males seeking status.

If on the other hand, the "B" boys know they have an equal shot at success with the "A" boys, they will try to compete with the "A" boys. If the setup is that half fail, and must settle for low status, the losers may become embittered BUT a thirty year old loser who tried and failed is a very different animal as far as his impact on society is concerned, than a 15 year old loser who knows that he has no chance in society to begin with. If the 15 year old has any spunk in him he will try to make some kind of chance for himself, esp. if he is not alone, but in company with 20% or 30% of that society. The 30 year old loser already has a wife and kids to think about.
