"...so perhaps lying is such a natural function of being human that constant reminding- secular or religious- is the only thing that can tamp it down a little- although clearly it does not eliminate it.

I don't lie. I repeat that often because I value that personal characteristic and want people to expect that from me, but most people (other than my kids who know me very well) roll their eyes try to convince me that we all do lie.

Embellishing stories? I am tempted to make myself seem like more of the hero in my own life and may have exaggerated recollections ... perfect recall is probably not possible. I doubt that I've done that in a way meant to deceive others about the nature of events, which is what I think you are accusing police officers of.

Perjury as a crime is a joke (except for clinton of course). Lawyers tell me it is common in the courts where people swear to be truthful, in almost every case, and no one gets prosecuted. You tell me that it is common in every type of human encounter.

Yet we all agree to try to tamp it down.

"natural function of being human that constant reminding- secular or religious- is the only thing that can tamp it down"

Lieing is honored to be the most common theme, central to most human being's unhappiness with their membership in any group where disputes arise. Whether the charge is corruption, infidelity, or simple disappointment ... there it is. I am not arguing that it is abnormal to lie. It may be abnormal not to.
