The 1st degree murder life sentence in Canada is exactly that as long as you are alive, you will be serving a sentence. There is a faint hope clause that says that under some conditions for exemplary behavior you can apply for parole after only 15 years, and you are guaranteed the right to apply after 25 years. You must pass all the requirements of the parole board, before you get out. Often parole after 25 years is to a halfway house and usually prior to that you must complete escorted passes, and day passes. For lesser counts of murder the sentence is the same, but the parole eligibility is earlier. There is also the Canadian Dangerous offender status which once given commits you to prison until you are no longer dangerous.
