The domestic dual-loyalty Zionists keep telling me that we should support Israel because it's the only democracy in the ME. When I point out that it isn't, and that we routinely support all sorts of governments elsewhere if it's in our interest, they say nothing. We certainly didn't support the Lebanese democracy when Israel invaded it.

I think support for Israel is just a guilty habit acquired post-holocaust, strengthened during the Cold War, when it made a little sense, if only as a weapon-system scrimmage, against the Soviet Arab proxys.

In the current geopolitical situation, it makes no sense at all. It works against our interests, since we need the oil owners to have a friendly attitude toward us. Supporting Israel works directly against our current needs. Israel is useless as a proxy - we have to beg them NOT to get involved militarily, in the few rare cases where they've offered.

You are amazed that the governments support other governments and groups that have similar interests ? Are you amazed that proxy wars exist ?
