I always thought that Star Trek was a good example of liberal ideology. There they didn’t even stop with the UN, but went all the way to the Federation of Planets.

No, it isn't. There are a host of issues, from stem cell research to the Schiavo debacle, where the Republicans have managed to alienate a lot of people. By consistently playing to a fraction, albeit a large fraction, of their base, they are driving off the rest.

Sadly, the Democrats aren't helping themselves very much. Their biggest problem is they bend over backwards to avoid offending anyone. Even those who wouldn't be offended. So they spend a lot of time running around in little circles, waving their hands instead of taking a stand.

If ever the time was ripe for a viable third party, it is now.
