True, but it is also the proximity to ME oil supplies and the strategic position in the Arab world. If AQ wins control over all or part of Iraq - like Hamas just won the Gaza area - they would become important big hot shots. Rulers of nearby nations could no longer afford to bribe them... might have to submit.

Exactly... It would take a pretty brutal and definitive defeat to convince their supporters that they are betting on the wrong horse.
