True, but it is also the proximity to ME oil supplies and the strategic position in the Arab world. If AQ wins control over all or part of Iraq - like Hamas just won the Gaza area - they would become important big hot shots. Rulers of nearby nations could no longer afford to bribe them... might have to submit.

I disagree. Hamas won nothing. And if shutting off oil supplies will harm non-believers, AQ is all for it. This may be about money for Hamas, it is not for AQ diehards.

With a population of about 1.2 million and no strategic weaponry, Gaza is not important militarily.
If Gaza was important. Hamas would not have have won. I think the likely outcome is the population of Gaza may swell with militant Muslim residents of Jerusalem. At least in Gaza they can access the sea. That may actually reduce the pressure on Israel.

If I am right, conceding Gaza to Hamas will prove to be brilliant strategy by Israel. Shoving a consolidated Hamas into the Mediterranean Sea later will be easy from Gaza.

Consider this:

1. There is no money to be made directly in Gaza. Hamas makes all their money from donations to the cause (the destruction of Israel) - including dollars from Arab and US sources.

2. AQ is not interested in control of oil money for mission acomplishment. IMO AQ shows no sign of financial distress. AQ's design and mission is based on 1. strict enforcement of adherence (by Muslims) to their version of Mohammed's teachings 2. the conversion or slaughter of non believers to the Muslim faith, and 3. the imposition of sharia law on all human beings.
