While it is true that you are as often wrong as you are right when you try to apply a generalization to a specific case, it is therefore something that you should not do whenever individuals are involved for fear that some people are inevitably unfairly tarnished.

However, generalizations are sometimes useful.

Tree huggers for the most part do not want to harm anyone or anything.

Right wingers generally have very narrow views on how people should look, act, and behave. Some of those people feel strongly about those they disagree with and have extreme prejudices. There could be right wing Christians, Moslems, Communists, and even people professing love of freedom - but they often share similar views on how to resolve conflict.
