So what would a better policy look like?

I don't wish to repeat myself, so I refer you to this post. Message 23655861

Forestry becomes impossible when people start camping out in tree tree tops in order to make their point. The people who do that don't understand what they are talking about, and trying to explain it to them is fruitless.

I'm not defending departure from non-declining even flow, just trying my best to explain it. It has major problems, principal of which is once you grab the tiger by the tail you better hang on or you will suffer the consequences.

Every project I participated in considered every forest value, including salmon, birdlife, wildlife, and sensitive species. I went to a great deal of trouble to make sure they were not unduly impacted. Many of them are doing better now than ever before.

I don't know why you have a problem with timber companies making a profit. If they can't do that, then why would they bother making the boards for your house? See, you're just as much a part of this as any of them, unless you're some kind of monk.

I'm quite sure that Teddy Roosevelt would approve of the tracks I made in the National Forests that he started. They'll be around a long time after both you and I are stardust again.
