That doesn't entirely explain it since it is a trend.

More countries are nationalizing their resource extraction industries. (Venezuela and Russia come to mind), or giving rights to mine them to national favorites when in the past large "western" (often US) companies might have gotten the rights.

That doesn't explain all of it. In the oil market the reserves and production in the US haven't kept pace with the rest of the world. The same could be true for some other industries.
