You are only showing your ignorance of military matters. If you cant believe me ask unclewest. An army is not run by privates, its not even operationally run by officers. Its run by NCO's. It takes many years to develop a sufficient cadre of trained experienced NCO's. In Iraqs case they have suffered greatly from an inexperienced officer and NCO ranks. From all I have seen, the Iraqi soldier properly LED isnt a bad fighter. Its just that they do not have that leadership needed. Too much corruption in the officer corps and too little number of qualified NCO's. jdn

Yo Pomp,
Hope you are well. It is Copper River season again! We will always be grateful for that intro.

Time to foresee either our pullback and change of focus, or our gradual withdrawal, or other strategic and tactical steps....but we have to learn to plan beyond the Surge!!

The Surge will end! What's next!

Durn good question and well framed.
I see no opportunity left for a military victory. The politicians started this war (that includes both sides of the aisle), and they need to end it.

I can envision a different and workable military strategy and tactic, but I believe we have screwed this pooch to death. I am convinced the American people will not be willing to provide our military yet another opportunity to change field commanders and field tactics. I believe 5 years, $500 Billion, and a likely 5,000 combat deaths will be all our country will endure on behalf of Iraqi Freedom...and we are nearly there on all three counts.

This war seems bound to go full circle and land in the laps of those who initiated it for a solution.

You asked what's next? It should be painfully obvious that -
a. AQ remains strong, likely stronger than 5 years ago.
b. We cannot do another Iraq like we did this Iraq.

We need to look now well beyond Iraq. Whatever happens in Iraq will not conclude the struggle nor the armed hostilities. Our military is in desperate need of a complete overhaul. That has not been done since DOD was founded in 1946 and America has not won a war since. DOD has become the losing arm of our armed forces. DOD has grown to 670,000 civilian employees. Compare that to the meager 505,000 on active duty in the US Army today. Talk about bureaucratic bloat!

We cannot continue to lose these small wars and survive as a free nation. By now it should be clear enough to all that each loss further emboldens our enemies.

The question, "What's next?" begs for an answer. And it better be a good one.

Stay Safe,
uw
