Well, I stand by what I said about training an army. I presume then you are for an immediate pullout. Guess you have no ideas as to what will happen then. As to mistakes made, hindsight is everything. Personally, I never supported disbanding the Iraqi army. I might have eliminated much of the officer cadre but not the troops. Too bad we didnt have a Patton or McArthur when we needed him. jdn

Why do you automatically assume that because I feel the current strategy is terribly flawed that I MUST be for immediate pullout? That sounds like ol' Mr. Bush (you are either with us or with the terrorists), or ol' Condi (No one could see it coming....). Why is it so many of Mr. Bush's supporters can't see there are a half dozen options....and anything is better than where we are now.

I have posted many, many times that the first step is to get our men and women out of the center of Baghdad and other urban centers. We can stay in the countryside out of Anwar, in the Kurd region, in Kuwait, etc. We can evaluate whatever the developments may turn out to be after WE make the first move in dealing with our true national interest...

Then, if we need to move back in full throttle...we could. If we decide to ease out, we could. If we want to stay on the sidelines in our huge new bases rattling our sabres at the Iranians, Syrians, et al, while the Sunnis and Shia kill each other, we could. As to your comment about: "Guess you have no ideas as to what will happen then"...Guess what? NONE of us do! Certainly not this administration that has gotten everything wrong so far.

Why don't we ease back, watch, listen and keep our options open? Or do you want to keep surging for three more years?

Make the Iraqis stand up and govern. Make them decide to defend their new nation, if its worth defending. Why are WE carrying their issues, when they can't even decide whether to go on vacation for the summer or not?

Oh, and as for the Iraqi army....and the 14,000 missing weapons....starting in 1940 how long did it take the U.S. to mobilize when our national interest was threatened? Yeah, we were eight times bigger than Iraq back then (ten times now), but it didn't take four years.....

C'mon, you're almost there. It's just a hop skip and a jump from blaming the Generals to coming to terms with who's really responsible for our failure in Iraq...
