I sometimes think the US is in a long term political transition to some sort of starkly different political alignment. And that it's simply taking a very long time. Something that started when LBJ famously said that his various domestic measures would lose the south for the Dem party. And thus breakup FDR's famous and awkward patched together coalition.

But then I think that we are just waddling through in awkward big tent fashion.

Had Bush been successful, he might have pushed the Dem party into a bicoastal base and the Reps generally occupying the area between the coasts. But that's such a failure now it's not even worth putting it on the conversational table.
