Other than talk radio (where liberals can't get any ratings) and Fox (that blows CNN and MSNBC away), there is very little conservatism in the major media except the stock market/business related shows, magazines, and newspapers. The major networks all lean center left in their reporting, but hard left privately. 2. I think the main reason no one cares about a fence on the Canadian border is that millions of low skilled Canadians aren't coming here illegally. 3. There is obviously some bigotry involved, but mostly it's a matter of economics. The emergency rooms and public school systems in some areas are filled with illegals. There are also crime issues. Most people don't think all these low skilled workers are contributing nearly as much as they are getting at a time when many low skilled legal Americans are struggling. Many feel that a welfare state is not compatible with the mass immigration of low skilled workers. In addition, as you suggested, they are suppressing wages in many jobs by creating a greater supply of workers. The extent of the immigration and other issues are also factors. When my grandparents came to Ellis Island from Italy there were some very strict standards about who they let in. If you didn't pass, you were sent home on the same boat. It may not have been a very compassionate process, but it helped guarantee that if Americans were going to accept new people into their country, both sides got a good deal. Since there was no welfare state, those that couldn't make on their own or with the support of their family went back home on the next boat. Finally, those immigrants came in numbers that changed neighborhoods. The current wave is changing cities, states, language, laws, culture etc... Many people are not comfortable with that. To me, both parties are equally terrible on this issue. To be in favor of this mass immigration because you are either pro cheap labor or because you see new future democrats (which is what the left sees and many on the right fear) despite most Americans being against it and the liklihood that it will be a burden on our safety net system for quite some time is a horrible way for any leadership behave. I think both sides should be rounded up and deported with all the illegals.
