Hard Liquor Reviews. I cannot drink wine due to gout, but I can drink hard liquor. This is pretty healthy stuff if you stick to about 2 ounces a day or less for women and 3 ounces a day for men. I pretty much have to get my women drunker than that, but, for health rather than seduction purposes, 2 ounces works fine. This is more of a weight thing than a gender difference. If you have a 200 pound girlfriend, she can do 3 ounces. <G> Anyway, I have been tasting some of the best of the best of the stuff I love and here are my very biased findings:

Gin. 1. The best is still Beefeaters. More flavorful botanicals than other gins. It is considered by many to be an old man's gin. Sign me up for AARP.

2. Citadelle. Really nice stuff, flavorful and not real alcoholic.

3. Boodles. Winston Churchill's favorite, but a bit strong on the alcohol for me.

4. Bombay Sapphire. The darling of the froo-froo crowd, but a bit tasteless for my druthers.

5. Junipero. Can you say wood alcohol?

6. Hendrick's. Cucumber is the main botanical. Interesting. Flavorful. Not a great flavor, but flavorful. If you like cucumbers more than I do, this could be your huckleberry.

Bourbon.

1. Woodford Reserve. Ooooooooh, baby! This stuff be good.
Great flavor and smooth as a baby's butt.

2. Buffalo Trace. Lighter than Woodford, it is still nice sipping whisky and great for a change.

Scotch. O.K., there are no single malts here. The simple fact is, blended Scotch was invented because most single malts are undrinkable in civilized company. When mixed together by a genius, they can form a whole that is better than the sum of the parts.

1. Dewar's 12 year old. Regular Dewar's is nearly as good and much cheaper, but this is a nice one if you want to show how great Scotch whisky should taste.

2. Chivas 18 year old. Very nice, though I think the blender at Dewar's makes a better mix. It is a close decision and at twice the price of the Dewar's 12 year old, I go Dewar's.

3. Compass Box "Alysa." Who are these guys? Why do they make such a great whisky? And why do my stores get in one bottle every other year?

Rum. Captain Morgan is not in this Navy.

1. English Harbor 5 year Antigua. Wow, what a flavor. Like drinking a Rum Baba after it's been pureed in the blender.

2. Flor de Cana Centario 12 year old. Nearly as good as the 21 year old at one third the price. Dark and muskier than the English Harbor. Many will prefer this more sophisticated taste over English Harbor's slap you in the face and make you notice act.

3. Bacardi 8. Yeah, Bacardi. Hard to believe, but this is really nice rum.

There are many rums costing over $100 that are superb, but these 3 are as good at a much lower price.

Tequilla. I used to say "I don't like tequilla." Then I tasted 1800 Anejo and now I like it. A lot. 1800 Resperado and Silver are not as good, but they aren't bad, either. The Anejo is Ultimate tequilla priced as top shelf. There are many, many top shelf tequillas priced at Ultimate, mainly the ones who do the advertising.

Irish Whisky. I am not a big fan of Irish or Canadian whiskys, thinking they have little character. However, if you offer some Clontarf neat or on the rocks, I won't decline it.

Cognac. Okay, the best ones are way up in that special occasion price range. Claude Chatelier XO is special at every day prices.

Vodka. This crap has no flavor, but it is still nice for frozen Russians, Screwdrivers and keeping the folks who don't want their spouse to know they've been drinking (as if passing out on the floor isn't a dead giveaway) happy. I like Ketel One because it is so smooth and this wheat vodka makes for a great vesper with Beefeater's. But, I will gladly yield to those who love this stuff, because I have a vodka drink less than once a month. I do know regular Stoli is way overpriced and fancy Stoli is wayer overpriced.

Remember, don't drink and drive. Or putt.
